Alan Rudolph continues to solidify his reputation as a master extractor of great performances and some very interesting characters, in this case: Nick Nolte as a distinguished looking sleaze ball congressman, Leslie Anne Warren as a has been Diva, Nathan Lane as a lounge crooner and voice impersonator, Will Patton as a dishonest real estate tycoon, Delmutt Mulroney as the local stud, and Emily Watson as the gum chewing security guard.
The actors are all of very good but I had no idea that Emily Watson was so funny. She’s not too bright (she was hit in the head with a bowling ball as a child) but likes the excitement of detective work, her brother was a cop killed in action. She has a terrible time with the English language, mixing up her clichés at every opportunity. When a co-worker is stabbed by a shoplifter, who she then catches, her boss decides to send her to a peaceful resort casino to get over it. However this plan backfires as she gets involved in a murder and has to do some serious detective work to get herself out of trouble.
